Usman and Wajahat blast centuries

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 8: Unbeaten centuries by Usman Tariq and Wajahatullah Wasti guided Allied Bank Limited (ABL) into an impregnable position on the first day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Group-II match against Dadu here on Wednesday.

Usman, the left-handed opener, was batting on 119 while former Test batsman Wajahat had helped himself to 102 in the unbroken second wicket partnership of 205 after Dadu had crumbled for just 102 in their first innings.

The bankers are already in front by 160 runs with nine wickets in hand. Usman has so far slammed eight fours and three sixes in his 180-ball knock while Wajahat has punctuated his 147-ball innings with 10 fours and a brace of sixes.

Earlier, ABL’s stand-in captain Arshad Khan proved a handful for the largely inexperienced Dadu batsmen. The Test reject captured four for 23 in 9.5 overs as only Shahid Qambrani, the Dadu skipper, managed to come to terms with the opposition.

Qambrani scored exactly 50 while facing 65 deliveries and striking six boundaries.

Mohammad Zahid Sr, the slow left-armer, and ex-Test pacer Ata-ur-Rehman shared the remaining six wickets between them for 20 and 29 runs, respectively.

Meanwhile, Maisam Hasnain came to Karachi Whites’ rescue after Multan had gain early honours in the match at UBL Sports Complex.

The Whites skipper scored an unbeaten 145, which included 20 fours and one six, as side reached 267 for six at close of play.

Earlier, Multan had reduced the champions to 18 for three before Maisam and Iqbal Shaikh (53) revived the innings with a fourth-wicket stand worth 108 runs.

Bahawalpur’s left-arm paceman Kamran Hussain made light work of Pak PWD batting by picking up seven for 46 in a match that started after lunch because of fog at Bahawalpur Stadium.

The visitors were bowled out for 146 in the last over of the day with Saad Wasim making an unbeaten 52.
