KARACHI: Ibad not acceptable as governor: JI

KARACHI, Dec 24: Jamaat-i-Islami has urged all the political forces in the province to raise their voice collectively against the nomination of a ‘suspect’ for the highly prestigious slot of governor.

The Secretary General of the party, Munawwar Hasan, indicated that the nominee was facing a number of cases, including criminal, registered against him at different police stations in Karachi.

The JI leader was speaking at a press conference at the Idara Noor-i-Haq here on Tuesday.

“The undemocratic approach, on Sindh, of the people at the helm of affairs clearly reminds of the shabby treatment meted out to the East Pakistan people by the then rulers in early 70s which sowed seeds of acrimony and hatred and ultimately led to the dismemberment of the country,” Munawwar Hasan remarked.

He recalled that even Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali had pledged no interference in the formation of government in Sindh. Contrary to his promise, he added, he remained in the city for four days to ensure installation of a government of his choice.

Expressing his strong reservation over almost certain appointment of Dr Ishratul Ibad as Governor of Sindh, he recalled that the PM had clearly and repeatedly pledged that the cases instituted against any person would not be rescinded. However, he pointed out, the PM had been quoted as saying that all the cases registered against the nominated governor had been withdrawn.

“This is an undeniable fact that the government is bent upon handing over the province to the elements who in the past had been involved in criminal activities and extortion and who had taken refuge on foreign land for decades to escape accountability,” he said.

“We are not prepared to accept one-sided and arbitrary decisions of the federal government to foist criminals and extortionists over people of Sindh,” he declared. —PPI
