KARACHI: Rs100m school improvement projects under way


KARACHI, Oct 31: Rs100 million will be spent on education sector reforms and the presidential programme of providing facilities to schools in Karachi.

This amount will be spent on 2,594 schemes of drinking water tanks, construction of toilets, provision of electricity and construction of boundary walls in schools. Work is already under way on more than 600 such schemes.

In order to inspect the schemes, the DCO Karachi, Shafiqur-Rehman Paracha visited the schools with the EDO, Education, Prof Rais Alvi, and other officials.

In Karimabad, the DCO inspected the work of additional class rooms and drinking water tank at Government Boy School.

In Karachi work is going on the construction of 1,197 toilets in schools at a cost of Rs35,000 per toilet.

Drinking water tanks are being constructed in 636 schools with each tank costing Rs30,000.

Boundary walls are being constructed around 42 girls schools and each wall costs Rs220,000.

Computer laboratories are being constructed in 18 schools at a cost of Rs1 million each lab.

During the inspection of these facilities in schools, the DCO also reviewed the conditions of cleanliness and the performance of the school management committees.

For the first time a system has been devised for the expenditure of government fund by the headmaster in consultation with parents and elected members of the management committees, which would help bring improvement in the condition of schools. —APP
