KARACHI, Oct 31: The district and sessions judge, West, Ms Qaiser Iqbal, on Thursday sentenced a man to death for murdering his brother.
Meraj Khalid had stabbed his younger brother Mohammed Ali to death on September 27, 1999 in their house in Baldia Town in a domestic dispute.
The judge also ordered the convict to pay Rs50,000 as compensation to the legal heirs of his brother.
LIFE SENTENCE: An additional district and sessions judge, Central, Ahmed Nawaz Shaikh, sentenced a former lance naik of the Bhittai Rangers to life in jail for murdering a man.
The Rangers personnel, Mohammed Yaqoob, had shot dead Syed Zafar Ali in Jauharabad on August 14, 1995. The victim was reading a newspaper and the lance naik killed him when the victim refused to give him the newspaper.
ACQUITTED: The special court for offences in banks, headed by Judge Syed Ikram Hussain Jaffery, acquitted a head cashier of United Bank in a fraud case.
Abdul Karim was arrested and booked by the FIA for allegedly misappropriating Rs700,000 from the bank.
The judge acquitted him of the charge as the prosecution could not establish its case against him.
CORRUPTION REFERENCE: Judge Mohammed Jawaid Alam of the Accountability Court No 4 adjourned the hearing of a reference against a former chief of the Pakistan Navy, Mansoorul Haq, and another former naval officer after recording the statement of a prosecution witness.
Mr Haq and Commodore Mirza Ashfaq Baig are being tried for causing a loss of
more than Rs1.8 billion to the national exchequer in the purchase of three
vessels for the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation.
It was alleged that when Mr Haq was appointed Chief of the Naval Staff, he hatched a conspiracy, with absconder Rear Admiral Javed Ali (retd) and co- accused Ashfaq Baig, to purchase the ships at exorbitant prices in 1994.
The three naval officers were charged with violating the laid-down procedure, terms of approval and purchased the ships, which were not technically suitable.
Moreover, it was alleged, the purchase of the ships was against the selection criteria of the Board of Directors and without considering the classification record of the ships, payment of custom, regulatory and other duties.
The ships were Apolonia, purchased for $14.82 million and later renamed Sawat, Ora Bhum for $15.55m (Shalamar) and Independent Voyager for $16.77m.
Mehmood Ali, a general manager of the PNSC, appeared as a prosecution witness and he was also cross-examined by defence counsel.
