NA session on completion of election results: Ranjha

ISLAMABAD, Oct 30: Federal Law Minister Dr Khalid Ranjha said on Wednesday that it is ironical on the part of the certain quarters to blame the government for the delay in calling the National Assembly session before the completion of election results.

Speaking in PTV programme ‘News Night’ he said every body knows that it is only after the completion of the election results that president calls the assembly session.

He said the completion of the election process is the job of the Election Commission which it is doing efficiently and the government cannot be held responsible if there is any delay for certain reasons.

There are 70 reserved seats for women and minorities which will be determined by the political parties in accordance with their share in the light of the prescribed formula.

He said as the result of the elections is not yet final therefore it is not possible to calculate how many women seats each party will get.

Replying to an audience question he said the government is not considering any proposal to amend the law barring elected members from floor-crossing.

The law is still there and it will remain the same, he added.

He said, there will be no option with the president but to ask the leader of the majority party in the House to form government.

Asked will there be hindrance in the functioning of the local government after the restoration of assemblies he said, there will be no such thing if every party plays its assigned role. The role of the assembly members is to make legislation while to carry out the development activities is the job of the local governments. —APP
