KARACHI: Suspect killed by police

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Oct 30: A young man died in police custody on Wednesday, while another was shot dead in what police said to be an encounter late Tuesday night.

Police arrested Ali Akbar, aged 30, a drug addict on complaint of his mother, Gul Bibi, and booked him under section 151 on Tuesday.

His mother had complained to the police that in case of non- availability of heroin, her addict son used to beat his younger brothers and demanded money.

The drug addict was kept in the lock-up of Manghopir police, where his condition worsened on Wednesday morning. He was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died during treatment, hospital sources said.

Police shot dead a man in what they claimed to be an “encounter” with suspects in North Karachi late Tuesday night.

Two suspects riding a motorcycle were roaming in sector 5-B 1, North Karachi. When they were signalled to stop, the suspects opened fire on the policemen, wounding one of them and tried to flee. The police returned fire, seriously injuring one of the suspects, who fell on the ground, while his accomplice escaped.

Both, the injured suspect and the policeman, were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead on arrival, while the policeman, identified as Mohammad Yaseen, was admitted to the hospital with a bullet wound in his arm.

The dead man was identified as Abdul Majeed alias Jeer, police said, adding that he had been released from jail after serving a 12-year imprisonment.

Police also claimed to have identified the absconding accomplice as Saeed Aryan, a dismissed police head constable.

A pistol was recovered from the possession of the dead man.
