Iran expels Swedish diplomat

Published October 23, 2002

TEHRAN, Oct 22: Iran has expelled a Swedish diplomat in a tit-for-tat move, an Iranian government source said on Tuesday.

“The Swedish diplomat has been expelled in a counter-measure for the expulsion of an Iranian diplomat this week,” the official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.

The Swedish diplomat has been given eight days to leave Tehran, he said.

It was not immediately known why the Iranian diplomat had been expelled from Sweden. A spokesman for the Swedish Foreign Ministry declined to comment.

Other sources in Tehran said the Swedish diplomat, Jonas Wendel, had been working as deputy to the Swedish ambassador. Efforts to contact the Swedish embassy in Tehran were unsuccessful.—Reuters
