Expats body demands power transfer

By Abdus Sattar Ghazali

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 21: The Pakistan American Democratic Forum (PADF), a leading organization of Pakistani Americans, has asked the government to restore the 1973 Constitution and transfer power to the elected representatives of the people.

In a statement issued here on Monday, the California-based PADF demanded that the government must allow the newly-elected members of the national and provincial assemblies to take the oath under and in accordance with the 1973 Constitution and not under the recently-introduced amendments to the Constitution.

The PADF statement said that the various instruments of the military regime must refrain from tampering with the process of formation of a coalition government and let the political parties work out their own agreements.

The PADF believes that the first test of good-faith transfer of power is to restore and respect the 1973 Constitution. “And the first test of its restoration lies in having the elected members of the national and provincial assemblies take oath of office under the Constitution, as required by the Constitution,” it stressed.
