NOWSHERA, Oct 20: Two people were seriously injured when the members of a customs mobile squad opened fire on a car carrying smuggled cloth to Punjab near Kund checkpoint on GT Road here on Sunday.
The injured, Ali Marjan and Sher Ali, who are said to be Afghan refugees, were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar in critical condition.
The customs staff recovered 2,800 yards of foreign cloth from the car (FDJ-999), which was also badly damaged in the firing.
The customs staff said that the smugglers tried to escape, upon which they opened fire on the car, which resulted in serious injuries to the two inmates. The car was also badly damaged in the firing.
On search, the staff recovered 2,800 yards smuggled cloth from the car, customs officials said.
The Akora Khattak police and customs staff have registered a case against them.
The injured have demanded an inquiry into the incident, accusing the customs staff of gross excess.
