KARACHI, Oct 20: The weekly Sunday bazaar, immensely popular among booklovers, was held on the lawns of the Frere Hall on Sunday amid tight security arrangements all around.
The city government recently decided that it would resume holding the Sunday book bazaar after a gap of nearly four months.
Following the June 14 bomb blast in front of the US Consulate, the authorities closed the Sunday book bazaar which used to be held on the lawns of the Frere Hall.
City government officials told Dawn that previously more than 60 booksellers had put up their stalls on the lawns of the Frere Hall. “These booksellers organize the book bazaar on a self-help basis. That is to say, they divide among themselves the expenditure of furniture and electricity.”
Some booksellers were however upset with the security arrangements which were so tight that they had scared away a large number of potential book buyers.
“Police check cars going through this section of Abdullah Haroon Road. A lot of people, who used to otherwise drop by to take a look at the books on sale, avoided this route because of the hassle,” a seasoned bookseller told Dawn.
