KARACHI: Reckless driving claims two lives: Nine cars, 16 bikes hijacked

KARACHI, Oct 5: Reckless driving claimed two lives in the city on Saturday.
A woman was run over by a bus of route 19-D (JE-0276) near Jehangir Park in Saddar. The woman, later identified as Zahida Naeem, aged 35, was rushed to a hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival. Her minor son Kashif escaped unhurt.
Police said that Zahida, mother of seven, resident of a nearby locality, was out for grocery shopping and the accident took place while she was walking across a road. Police arrested the bus driver, Ghulam Qadir, and impounded the bus.
A man, Ameer Bakhsh, aged 55, died when his motorcycle collided with a minibus on Sharea Faisal. The bus driver drove off after the accident.
CARJACKING: Twenty-five vehicles — nine cars and 16 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Saturday, police said.
Five cars were hijacked and four others stolen in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, New Town, Gulberg, Nazimabad, and other areas.
Seven motorcycles were hijacked in Saddar, SITE, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Azizabad, and other localities. Nine others were stolen in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, and other areas.
ARRESTED: Police arrested a car hijacker on Saturday night while he was trying to hijack a car in North Nazimabad.
A senior police officer said that two policemen, patrolling on a motorcycle, noticed a car hijacking activity near the KFC restaurant in North Nazimabad. They challenged the suspects, who opened fired and attempted to flee. Police returned the fire and arrested one of the suspects. His accomplice, however, escaped. The absconding suspect might have received a bullet wound. A beggar also suffered bullet injury to her thumb. She was taken to a hospital. The name of the arrested suspects could not be ascertained immediately.
KILLED: A man was stabbed to death in Quaidabad on Saturday.
Police said that the conductor of a bus, identified as Fareed Khan, aged 25, had an argument with the bus driver on a small matter. The driver lost his temper and stabbed Fareed, repeatedly, with a dagger.
The driver fled the scene leaving Fareed in a pool of blood. The cries of the injured bus conductor drew the attention of people who rushed him to a hospital and informed police. Doctors at the hospital were of the view that Fareed died of excessive bleeding.
