Hamza and Talal share honours

ISLAMABAD, Sept 20: Hamza Amin and Talal Safdar, both having a 12 handicap, shared the lead Friday in the amateur net competition of the Chief of the Army Staff Championship at the Rawalpindi Golf Club.

Hamza, of Islamabad Club and Rawalpindi’s Talal finished the day at 71 each while Omer (10) and Muhammad Babar Khokhar (6) both from the host club were joint second at 73.

Inyatullah, Maj Gen Tariq Masood and Adnan A Khan were all locked in third place with a net score of 74. The winner of the net tournament will take home the COAS Trophy.

Rawalpindi’s Vaqas Ahmed was ahead in the amateur gross event with 75 and Tariq Mahmood of Islamabad was a stoke behind at 76. Muhammad Babar Khokhar, another Pindi golfer trailed in third place with 79.

Tahir Naseem of Lahore Gymkhana led the field in the professional category striking two under par 70 with four birdies and two bogeys.

He had birdies on the first, third, sixth and the 14th holes while bogeying the 7th and the 11th as he collected 33 going out and 37 when coming back.

Ghaffar Ahmed of PTV,at one under par 71, with three birdies and a double bogey on the 10th was in second place. He also had three bogeys on the third, sixth and 11th holes.

But there was an interesting four-way tie for third place with Lahore Gymkhana’s Muhammad Javed, Rawalpindi’s Irfan Mahmood, Mahmood Kiyani of PTV and Waheed Baluch of Karachi, all level at par 72.

A cash prize of Rs 43,000 awaits the winner of the professional competition that has a total purse of Rs 300,000 put up by the sponsors Muslim Commercial Bank.

Meanwhile Akbar Ali scooped up Rs 16,000, winning the senior professional tournament played over two days with a score of 156 leaving Muhammad Shafiq (164) and Shaukat Ali 165 in second and third place respectively.

Maj Gen Askari Raza Malik took top honours in the seniors net event finishing with a score of 150 while Maj Gen Muhammad Arshad Malik (151) was second and Ali Akbar Naqvi third at 152.

Fasih Ali Anwar was first in the seniors gross, striking 163 followed by Brig Ghafoor Raja (164) and Maj Ejaz Sadozai (168).

Muhammad Umar Khokhar emerged the leading junior in the gross event played over two days scoring 176 with Wamiq Shakeel (184) taking the runner-up spot and Ali Khanzada (191) third.

Salman Jahangir with 124 captured the juniors net event in which Haider Atiq (139) was second and Bilal Tariq third at 157.
