KARACHI, Sept 14: Filthy water gushing out from choked sewerage lines has inundated a portion of the main University Road, near Al-Hilal Society, causing hindrance in the flow of traffic and unhygienic condition in the adjacent residential localities.
Motorcyclists are the worst sufferers as whenever a speedy vehicle passes through the affected portion of the road, sewage water accumulated on the road splashes on them. Besides, pedestrians crossing the road have no choice but to walk through the filthy water.
The ankle-deep water is accumulated between an apartment building, UK Centre, and Al-Hilal Society. The traffic proceeding towards the Jail Chowrangi from Hassan Square moves at a snail’s pace.
WATER SHORTAGE: Various parts of former districts West and Central remain in the grip of acute water shortage owing to the short supply of water from the Hub dam source.
The worst affected localities include several sectors of Orangi, Baldia, Shershah, Site industrial area, North Karachi and Surjani Town.
The residents of the affected localities complain that although the acute water shortage has been persisting in their localities for the last one month, the concerned officials of the KWSB have not yet succeeded in resolving the lingering issue.
The KWSB officials, however, attribute the problem to the reduced quantity of water to the city from the Hub dam reservoir, saying that the city is nowadays receiving only between 16 and 17 million gallons of water after every 72 hours from the Hub source, whereas the Wapda officials are supposed to supply 45 mgd for three consecutive days after a gap of every two days from the source.
The residents of the water-starved localities have demanded of the city Nazim and the KWSB managing director to instruct the concerned officials to immediately make arrangements for restoring the normal supply as in the absence of water they have no choice but to consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.
