Muttahida asks CEC to check govt ‘interference’

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Sept 10: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has demanded of the Chief Election Commissioner, Justice Irshad Hassan Khan (retired), to take notice of government’s excessive interference in the election campaign.

“Government functionaries are blatantly supporting certain political parties and groups to block the way of genuine representatives of the people to the elected institutions,” MQM Deputy Convener Kanwar Khalid Younas said in a letter written to the CEC.

The involvement of government agencies in the election campaign was exposed during a public meeting of a five parties religious alliance, Mr Khalid said.

“MQM posters, banners and flags are being removed, while operatives of different agencies are openly participating and fixing banners and posters of the candidates of a religious alliance,” he added.

The involvement of government agencies in the election campaign had created serious doubts about the holding of free, fair and impartial elections on Oct 10, he remarked.
