Record athletes apply for Asiad

SEOUL, Sept 9: A record number of athletes have applied to compete in the Asian Games which open in the southern city of Busan later this month, South Korean organizers said Monday.

The Busan Asian Games Organizing Committee (BAGOC) said final entry applications which it had received by Sunday showed “a record high in the number of participants” in Asiad.

All 43 Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) member states decided to field a total of 9,887 athletes to the biggest sports event in Asia, BAGOC said.

Hosts South Korea top the list of applicants with 1,008 hoping to compete, followed by Japan with 988 and China with 946.—AFP
