PESHAWAR, Sept 9: Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has condemned the incidents at the Karachi University in which protesting teachers, students and members of administrative staff were subjected to violence by para-military force.

It has urged for resolution of all issues without violation of academic freedom and dignity of teachers.

In a statement issued here on Monday, HRCP secretary- general Hina Jilani said the issue was between the teachers, students and administrative staff and should be resolved by the stake-holders themselves.

She said there was no need to use force against the teachers and the students and use of force against them would further aggravate the situation at the varsity.

The HRCP, she said, knew that discontent had been brewing the Karachi University for quite some time but such issues needed to be resolved within the academic requirements.

The serious allegations levelled by the teachers regarding their harassment by the para-military forces needed to be probed thoroughly, she said, adding that a high-level judicial commission should be instituted to do justice without discrimination.

Use of force and authoritarianism at the educational institutions would destroy whatever capacity to do good they have been left with.
