KARACHI: Rs39m for mangrove plantation

KARACHI, Sept 8: The Sindh government has allocated Rs38.92 million for the plantation of mangroves on 13,510 hectares in the Indus delta.

This was stated by Sindh Forest Minister Hasan Ali Chaniho, while presiding over a meeting at the forests department here on Sunday.

The meeting took serious notice of acute threats posed to mangroves forests due to environmental and ecological changes along the sea coast.

The minister observed that because of the receding level of water in the Indus, great damage has been caused to these forests, which resultantly has affected the growth of fish, shrimps and other marine life. He said there was valid apprehension about the reduced export of fish and shrimp this year.

He directed the forests department to carry out plantation of good quality mangroves in the Indus delta and along the coastline.—APP
