Bangladesh elects new president

By Nurul Kabir

DHAKA, Sept 5: A former Dhaka University professor and Vice- Chancellor of the private sector State University of Bangladesh, Iajuddin Ahmed, was declared unopposed President of Bangladesh yesterday.

He will be sworn in at 7:30pm on Friday evening at the Bangabhaban.

The election commission declared Prof Ahmed elected after the nomination papers of the other two candidates, who were neither proposed nor seconded by any member of the Jatiya Sangsad, were found invalid.

When the election commission found Prof Ahmed the sole candidate for the president’s election, scheduled to be held on Sept 16, it declared him elected unopposed.

Prof Ahmed was nominated by the ruling BNP-led four-party alliance, which commands two-thirds plus majority in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament).
