RAWALPINDI, Sept 2: The government of Japan will provide a Rs3.5 billion grant to the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) for constructing sewerage system in its areas, it has been learnt.

A four-member team of Japan International Development Agency, in a meeting held with the board officials on Monday, discussed different aspects of the project. Another meeting is scheduled to be held on September 5 to finalize the modalities of the new plan, sources told Dawn.

On the other hand, the cantonment board has prepared PC-1 of the project and is set to submit it to the federal government.

The plan will be executed in three phases. An amount of Rs1.3 billion has been kept for phase-1, whereas Rs1.1 billion has been allocated for phase-2 and phase-3 each.

The plan, when materialized, will solve the most pressing problem of sewerage in the cantonment areas. At present, there is no sewerage system in the whole of cantonment, except Chaklala-3, but even there the system is not functioning properly, sources said.
