LAHORE, Aug 18: Showing magnificent speed three-year- old bay filly Devi Husn Ki stormed home to win the Independence Day Cup run over five furlongs at the Lahore Race Course Sunday.
She defeated a year senior bay filly On On by over six lengths to prove her superiority, surprising everyone by her astonishingly easy victory. In fact it was her initial speed which left her 13 rivals staggering far behind.
Another bay filly Daring Eagle finished third three lengths further behind while yet another bay filly Lucky Credit Queen completed the frame another one-and-a-half lengths further away.
The connections of Devi Husn Ki should be grateful to the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards, who confirmed her inclusion in the cup race.
Her participation in the event was left at the option of the stewards at the time the handicaps were issued on Saturday. However, the stewards raised her weight from 8-8 to 8-13 because she was wrongly handicapped.
The joint favourite On On (Shahid Rehman) and Crysler (Javed Iqbal) were slow at the start and were out of the contest from the word go. In the same race jockey Qamar Zaman had managed fall from chestnut filly Flame owned by steward Malik Hamid Ali Noon. Obviously he was not questioned even.
The cup race featuring a card of six event was held as part of Lahore Race Club celebrations for the country’s Independence.
The main supporting event the Shor Kot Plate, a class III, IV and V combined handicap race contested over 900 metres was won by long shot Gambling Girl who beat fancied Arooj by two lengths. After the last minute withdrawal of Blu’s Wendy, Arooj had opened a firm favourite at 70 to 100 on.
In a last furlong rush of speed Gambling Girl fought a grim battle with Arooj and finally ran ahead two lengths clear of her. In the meantime Half Love and Might And Power finished third and fourth, respectively.
Jockey Majid Khan gave a dazzling display of horsemanship when he brought home three winners which included the Independence Day Cup and the supporting event winners. On each occasion he came like a whirlwind and snatched the race from his opponents.
His two winners Devi Husn Ki and Gambling Girl are trained by a very consistent professional Razzak and owned by Taufiq Kamal.
Riding boy M. Jehangir also scored a treble. He sailed in Track Star, Dhandhana and Golden Wings.
