KARACHI: Welfare bodies may be exempted from property tax
KARACHI, Aug 4: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro has said that the government will consider to exempt welfare organizations from property tax.
He was addressing as chief guest at a function held at K.M.A. School of the Kutiana Memon Association here on Saturday evening.
The governor said the property tax on welfare organizations was levied in view of the possibility of misuse. But tax exemption might be considered after consultation with prominent personages of welfare organizations.
He observed that certain educational institutions were charging exorbitant fees and, therefore, the government effort was to bring improvement in the quality of education of government schools. He added that the performance of Kutiana Memon School had strengthened the belief that the objective could be achieved.
He said the resources of the government were limited, but this constraint could be overcome if philanthropists and communities worked together.
The governor said that primary education had been made compulsory in Sindh and emphasis had also been laid on attendance. He assured that the government would extend full cooperation to the Kutiana Memon Association in whatever activities it would take including the housing schemes.
Later the governor distributed gold medals and commendation certificates among the position holders of the matric examination and the doctors and staff of the K.M.A. hospitals and schools.
FUND-RAISING DINNER: Speaking at a fund-raising dinner organised by Zindagi Trust held at the governor’s house on Saturday night, the governor observed that many children in our society were subjected to abuse, neglect and exploitation and the state did not have sufficient means to focus fully on such children. He stressed the need for a collective effort in that regard.
The function was also addressed by patron of the trust Lt Gen Munir Hafeez and its president Shahzad Roy.—APP
