KARACHI: Body on KCR submits report

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 22: The technical committee on revival of Karachi Circular Railway has submitted its report to the Additional Chief Secretary, Dawn learnt on Monday.

The technical committee, headed by KMTC director-general Zaheerul Islam, with the deputy district superintendent (E) of railways and KMTC consultants as its members, reviewed the study prepared by the Engineers Consultants International Limited (ECIL) and suggested modifications for presentation to the President, in accordance with the terms of reference of the study, sources in the transport department said.

The committee examined options in the light of the latest global technological trend available for the KCR and its extensions to serve other areas.

The committee was constituted in a meeting a couple of weeks back, chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary Shehzado Shaikh, and attended by officials of the city government, finance department, Karachi Mass Transit Cell, Pakistan Railways and others, sources said.

A visit was also arranged on Monday on the existing tracks of the KCR to review the viability and its implementation on the conceptual feasibility prepared by the ECIL. The committee examined the implementation in real terms and suggested some modifications.

Sources said the members had a complete consensus on the revival of the KCR operation and efforts were being made in this respect.
