Asylum boys claim abuse

Published July 22, 2002

SYDNEY, July 21: Two boys refused asylum by Britain have alleged they were abused by guards at Australia’s Woomera Detention Centre, it emerged Sunday, prompting an immediate government denial.

A video shot while the boys were on the run from Woomera was released by supporters as their father prepared to travel to the Australian capital Canberra Monday to seek an alternative refuge for his family.

In the video, the brothers Alamdar Baktiari, 13, and Montazar, 12, claim guards pushed them onto razor wire at Woomera and indiscriminately used tear gas around small children.—AFP
