KARACHI: KUTS’ meeting with VC next week


KARACHI, July 19: The executive council of Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) was informed on Friday at an emergency meeting by its office-bearers that dialogue could not be initiated with the vice chancellor on Friday owing to absence of university counsel and presence of some other officials.

In a press release on Friday, KUTS office-bearers said they understand that as per observations of the Sindh High Court, a meeting agreed by the university counsel will be arranged next week. KUTS looks forward to the beginning of negotiations with the VC in a conducive atmosphere.

Meanwhile, the University of Karachi has planned to establish a school of international standard for children of its employees besides setting up Baitul Maal for extending financial assistance to lower grade employees.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Zaffar Saeed Saifee revealed this to office-bearers of the Officers Welfare Association, Employees Welfare Association and Teachers Association of Karachi University who called on him Friday in his office. The meetings were held separately in a cordial atmosphere, says a KU press release.

The VC informed M. M. Arif, president of the officers association that the school will be established in university premises for which the KU has handed over good quality furniture worth Rs.5 million.

Moreover, employees in lower grade will be assisted from Baitul Maal keeping in view their self-respect.

Mr. Arif hailed the steps taken by the administration of the university, which have improved the punctuality of the staff. He also gave certain suggestions for the welfare of the officers. The VC promised to consider the suggestions.

President, Employees Welfare Association, Mohammad Arif, and general secretary Jalees Qazi during the meeting also presented several suggestions, which the VC had promised to consider. They declared to cooperate with the administration to create an atmosphere of mutual understanding.

A delegation of Teachers Association, consisting of Dr. Fahimuddin and Sarwar Nasim, president and general secretary of the association respectively, stated that they have great regard for the VC and consider him a member of same family.

Meanwhile, the Karachi University has reverted 22 computer operators of its different departments to their original posts as they could not qualify the standards set by the University Syndicate and the Universities Grant Commission.

With this administrative step, there will be a decline of Rs.0.8 million in the deficit of university. The computer operators working on daily wages, may continue as CCT showing better performance even if they do not meet the required conditions, says a KU press release.

It further stated that as per orders of the Chancellor, Mohammadmian Soomro, VC Dr. Zaffar Saeed Saifi has approved the affiliation of Institute of System Research and Imperial Institute of Technology, Islamabad, with University of Karachi.

This step has been taken due to their sound performance in Information Technology.

System Research Institute will be allowed to offer Bachelors in Software Engineering (BSSE) while Imperial Institute will be allowed to offer PGD courses in software development and BCS and BSSE programme.

According to another press release, the administration of Karachi University on the orders of Sindh High Court, has constituted a three-member inquiry committee to investigate alleged alterations in the results of Diploma of Child Health. The committee consists of Dean Faculty of Medicine Dr. S Tipu Sultan, Dean Faculty of Arts Dr. Abu Zar Wajidi and Deputy Director BCCT Syed Khalid.

The committee will submit its report on August 20. Dr. Khurshid Anwar and others had filed the petition against alterations in the results. — PPI
