RAWALPINDI, July 18: Mutahida Majlis-i-Amal will hold a workers’ convention here in Liaquat Bagh on July 25.

A spokesman for the alliance of seven religious parties told Dawn that the convention was part of a mass contact campaign for the forthcoming general elections during which conventions would be held throughout the country.

The Rawalpindi convention will be attended by Majlis president Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani, vice-president Qazi Hussain Ahmad and other prominent leaders including Maulana Samiul Haq, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Maulana Sajid Mir and Allama Sajid Ali Naqvi. The spokesman said the local administration had been informed about the programme.

Similar conventions will also be held in Peshawar on July 23, in Quetta on July 27 and in Karachi on July 30.

As part of its efforts to reach the people at grass-roots, Majlis-i-Amal has organized itself at provincial and district levels and plans to start Tehsil-level organization from July 21. Leaders of the seven parties at Tehsil level will choose one person to represent Majlis-i-Amal at Tehsil level. In case of differences, Tehsil heads of different parties will hold joint elections to choose their representative, the Majlis-i-Amal spokesman said.

Candidates for the national and provincial assemblies would also be chosen through mutual consultation, depending on the vote-bank of a party and position of its candidate in a particular constituency, the spokesman added.
