ISLAMABAD, July 17: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) condemned here on Wednesday the proposed constitutional amendment package, and said it was the sole prerogative of the elected parliament to make any amendment in the Constitution.
An announcement by PBC Secretary Mohammad Arshad said the PBC, in its meeting at Islamabad on July 13, while considering the constitutional amendments package, had opposed and condemned it as the Bar was of the view that it was the prerogative only of the elected parliament to make any amendment in the Constitution.
The PBC, with a view to mobilise public opinion, decided to elicit views of political parties on the constitutional amendments package through a following questionnaire:
1) Whether, in the opinion of your party, the Constitution should only be amended by a duly elected parliament; 2) Whether, in the opinion of your party, the Constitution can be amended by any individual/military rule; 3) and, if the answer to question No. 2 is in the affirmative, which of the amendments in the proposed constitutional package is acceptable to your party.
The heads of political parties have been requested to send the views of their party by way of answering the above questionnaire by July 24.
The PBC will again meet on July 27 for further consideration of the matter.
