Riding boy Qamar celebrates with double

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, July 7:  Riding  boy Qamar Zaman celebrated his elevation as jockey by bringing in a brace of winners during the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Sunday.

Qamar rode home the fancied Imagine If in the second race and then followed it up with a easy win on long shot chestnut filly Flame in the supporting and fifth event.

The leading riding boy in Lahore, Qamar Zaman had been upgraded as jockey after winning the riders championship for the Lahore racing calendar 2001-2002 ending June 30.

Qamar’s handling of Flame was particularly a treat to watch. Leading all the way right from the start, he cracked his whip in the air as the horses turned heads into the straight and Flame shot like an arrow to pass the finishing post ahead of the field. He defeated the fancied Crysler by five-and-a-half lengths. Sound Of Music, who chased Flame during the early part of the 900 metres race finally settled to finish third another one-and-a- quarter length back. Dahis Again completed the frame, five lengths further away among eight runners.

The feature and sixth race was cancelled by the Lahore Race Club  (LRC) stewards due to paucity of runners reducing the day’s card to five events. All races were contested over the sprinting distance of 900 metres.

Haji Fazal Hadi excelled among the trainers by scoring a double. He saddled both the winners for Qamar Zaman.

This was a day of upsets when in a card of five events, only one favourite obliged the punters. The lone favourite to win was grey Imagine. If in the second race. Favourites flopped in the other events, won by long shots.
