SAHIWAL, July 2: Judicial Magistrate Rai Liaquat Ali has served notices on the Lower Bari Doab Canal XEN, SDO, sub-engineer and two baildars accused of water theft.
Reports said district council’s former member Chaudhry Rashid alleged LBDC XEN Ghulam Asghar, SDO Azeem Mian, sub-engineer Masood Ahmad and two baildars Walayat and Inayat caused a breach in 4-R minor on May 23, 2002, to provide irrigation water to influential farmers.
The court, during the preliminary hearing, held the officials violators and served them notices of hearing on July 20.
‘REPAIR CHARGES’: A transformer installed by the Mepco on the Harappa-Naiwala Bangla Road burnt for the fifth time within a fortnight on Sunday.
Consumers have already paid Rs48,000 for the transformer’s repair four times within a short span of 15 days. On each occasion they have to pay Rs12,000. The demand of another Rs12,000 for its fifth repair has upset the consumers.
They have protested against Wapda for taxing consumers through exorbitant billing and forcing them to pay for the repair of their equipment as well.
Consumers have threatened to stage a rally on the GT Road if Wapda does not repair the transformer on its own.
THREE HELD: Noorshah police on Monday claimed arresting three drug pushers and recovering 20 kg hashish and two kg opium in a raid at Chak 54/4-R.
Police had the information that 38kg hashish and 11kg opium were being shifted from Okara to Sahiwal. A special team conducted a raid on the outhouse of Kazim Ali and arrested Zaheer Ahmed, Mumtaz and Allah Yar Qureshi. Their third accomplice, Niaz Loddoo, managed to escape on a bicycle with a bag containing 18kg hashish and 9kg opium.
Meanwhile, Noorshah police also arrested eight dacoits.
Those arrested included ring leader Zafri, Noor Hassan, Pehelwan, Amjad Ali, Nasir, Mansha, Ghulam Abbas, Yousaf, and also recovered looted valuables worth over Rs0.5 million, two guns, a revolver and a rifle. Their five accomplices, identified as, Farzand, Talib, Zahoor, Ahmed Ali and Sajawal made good their escape.
ASI ARRESTED: Noorshah police on Monday arrested an ASI involved in kidnapping and torturing his nephews at Chak 55/4-R.
The father of ASI Muhammad Akram had transferred his property in the name of his grandsons Ejaz and Nazar which annoyed the ASI. On Sunday, he along with his accomplices Riaz, Azam, Muhammad Hussain, Rashid and Hamid kidnapped Ejaz and Nazar, locked them in a room and subjected them to severe torture. They were getting signatures from them on white papers when police raided there, recovered the abductees and arrested the ASI. His accomplices however managed to escape from the scene. Ejaz and Nazar were admitted to a local hospital. Noorshah police have registered a case against the accused.
RELEASED: At least 96 prisoners, including a woman, involved in minor crimes were released on Monday from the central jail.
Sahiwal district and sessions judge Ali Hassan Rizvi, Okara DSJ and Pakpattan DSJ had visited jail on Sunday and ordered their release.
The Pakpattan DSJ had ordered immediate release of widow Shamim, Ejaz, Zahoor, Rashid, Muhammad Hussain, Muhammad Hassan, Anwar, Munawar Khan, Allah Ditta, Qamar Zahoor, Noor Ahmed, Amir Hamza, Muhammad Sadiq and Muhammad Arif.
RECORDS: The Punjab government will appoint archivists in 15 districts to preserve pre and post-independence records.
The districts are Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujrat, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Jhang, Sahiwal, Multan, Attock, Jhelum, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan.
It is learnt that the DCO’s have been asked to submit their recommendations within a week.
