KARACHI: Advisory body set up

KARACHI, June 20: An environmental advisory council will be set up to present practical suggestions for enforcement of environmental laws and their implementation.

This was stated by provincial minister for environment and forest, Hasan Ali Chaniho, while presiding over a meeting of the Environmental Protection Agency Sindh at his office on Thursday.

Mr Chaniho showed dissatisfaction saying the organization had done no positive work for the protection of environment in major cities. He said that action would soon be initiated against irresponsible officials.

He said the advisory council would include representatives of the agriculture, irrigation, forest, finance and environment departments, besides police, the Chamber of Commerce, NGOs and other concerned organizations.

He set up a governing body to be headed by himself to review the last year’s performance of EPA.

The minister said that the provincial coordinator of the national drainage programme would assist the committee working for the supply of underground water and improvement of harbour conditions.

On the occasion, DG EPA Sindh, Shafiq Ahmed Khoso, briefed the minister about the agency’s performance and the steps taken by it towards the upgradation of environmental conditions.—APP
