KARACHI: KUTS rejects task force proposals

KARACHI, June 12: The Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS), in a meeting on Wednesday, unanimously rejected recommendations of the task force on higher education.

The meeting was presided over by Prof Fahimuddin and attended by over 300 teachers.

The KUTS demanded that the steering committee should be disbanded and process of the so-called reforms in education, including establishment of a higher education commission, be stopped forthwith.

It called for restoration of the University Act 1974 in its original form, and added that vice-chancellors should stop taking decisions without holding meeting of statutory bodies and that teachers should be involved in all developmental process, decision-making and academic management.

Public universities are facing acute financial problems due to reduced government grants. The KUTS observed that provision of health, education facilities and security are the main responsibilities of the state. Education must be accessible to all sections of society at a minimum possible cost, it added.

The general body gave mandate to KUTS president and secretary to reject recommendations of the task force and steering committee’s activities.—PPI
