Dissolution of Kenyan body rejected

NAIROBI, May 30: World cricket chiefs say they will not recognise a decision by the Kenyan government to dissolve the Kenya Cricket Association.

Malcolm Speed, International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive Officer, said in a fax message to Kenya National Sports Council (KNSC) chairman Joshua Okuthe that the council would continue to recognise the association.

Minister for Sport Francis Nyenze dissolved the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) and the Kenya Cricket Association on May 17 following allegations of financial mismanagement and appointed caretaker committees to run them for three months until fresh elections for new leaderships..

However, the High Court in Nairobi overturned the minister’s decision and reinstated the elected officials of KCA on May 22 and KFF of May 23, saying the minister had usurped the powers of another office — Registrar of Societies.

The High Court allowed KFF and KCA to apply for permanent orders to bar the minister from interfering in running of both associations in future.

FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, reacted immediately and rejected the dissolution of its Kenyan affiliate.—Reuters
