Monty slips back after injuring spectator
WENTWORTH (England), May 25: Denmark’s Anders Hansen fired a seven-under-par 65 for a two-shot lead in the Volvo PGA Championship’s second round on Friday as overnight leader Colin Montgomerie slipped back after injuring a spectator with an errant drive.
The 31-year-old Hansen finished the day at 11-under-par 133 at Wentworth’s West Course while Montgomerie hit a 71 and was nine under overall.
The seven times European number one dropped three shots in his last four holes to share second place with Argentina’s Eduardo Romero, who carded a 68 on a day of gusting winds and occasional showers.
The 38-year-old Scot was tied for the lead with Hansen standing on the 16th tee but then struck a spectator on the back of the head when he pulled his drive well left.
The spectator, Englishman John Edom, was felled and, after recovering consciousness, received treatment from on-course medical staff.
He had his head bandaged and then shook Montgomerie’s hand before being taken to hospital as a precaution, tournament officials said.
“Colin was visibly distressed by the incident and enquired about Mr Edom’s health after finishing his round,” Montgomerie’s manager Guy Kinnings said in a statement.
Hansen dropped a shot at the par-four first but then collected eight birdies to hold the early clubhouse lead.
Romero, who fired an opening 67, eagled the par-four 11th when he holed his second shot with a nine iron from 135 yards from under some trees and, for a while, was the outright leader at nine under.
But the moustachioed Argentine dropped a shot at the long 17th before collecting his third birdie of the day at the last and had to settle for a 36-hole total of nine-under-par 135.

DUBLIN (Ohio): Justin Leonard fired a seven-under par 65 here Friday to pass his friend Harrison Frazar for a one-stroke lead when lightning halted the second round of the PGA Memorial tournament.
Leonard, the 1997 British Open champion, eagled the 15th hole and added five birdies in a bogey-free round on his way to a share of the lead at 10-under par 134.
An eight-foot eagle putt at the 15th hole gave Leonard the edge on Frazar, his college roomate at the University of Texas.
World No. 1 Tiger Woods will have a difficult time becoming only the third player in PGA history to win the same even four years in a row. The Masters winner fired a 70 to stand 10 strokes off the pace but refuses to admit defeat.
