FAISALABAD, May 16: The one-man tribunal constituted by the Punjab governor to probe into circumstances leading to police violence against media men did not initiate its proceedings on Wednesday after some journalists pointed out that the time allowed to it under its terms of reference had lapsed.

An application pointing out the lapse was filed on Wednesday before the district and sessions judge, Sher Zaheer Ahmad, by some local journalists. It said the tribunal was asked to complete its enquiry in 14 days.

The terms of reference were to ascertain the facts of the incident, what prompted police action against members of the press and who was responsible. It was also to ‘highlight other issues related to the incident.’

Over two dozen journalists were injured in the police baton-charge outside Iqbal Stadium on April 14 after they walked out to protest against the governor’s remarks in President Musharraf’s campaign rally.

The media-men had accused the police of attacking them without any provocation or warning. —Staff Correspondent
