Move to keep 60 ex-MPs out of polls

By Faraz Hashmi

ISLAMABAD, March 19: The government has referred a list of 60 former legislators to the National Accountability Bureau and Election Commission, seeking their disqualification from contesting the elections.

The government has cited their default on payment of bills during their stay in official lodges in the federal capital as the reason for this move.

Interestingly, the list contains names of some of the former MNAs and Senators who have passed away.

The amounts outstanding against the ex-parliamentarians ranged from Rs200 to Rs150,000 and some of the bills had been pending since 1985, when the democratic process was restored.
