LONDON, March 11: Chelsea comprehensively avenged their League Cup humiliation by Tottenham Hotspur with a 4-0 thrashing of their London rivals at White Hart Lane in the quarterfinals of the English FA Cup Sunday.
Chelsea’s reward is another derby match in the semifinal against west London neighbours Fulham, who ended first division West Bromwich Albion’s giant-killing run with a 1-0 win at the Hawthorns.
Also through to the last four are Middlesbrough, who face either Newcastle United or Arsenal after beating Everton 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium.
Newcastle and Arsenal meet in a quarterfinal replay on March 23 following Saturday’s 1-1 draw.
The west London side went ahead in the 12th minute when Spurs keeper Neil Sullivan failed to deal with a corner and French defender William Gallas scored from point-blank range.
After Les Ferdinand had headed a sitter against a post for Spurs, Chelsea doubled the lead three minutes into the second half when Gudjohnsen sprung the offside trap and raced clear to score with a calm finish.
Poor Spurs defending allowed Graeme Le Saux to lash in the third after 55 minutes and Gudjohnsen to add the fourth 11 minutes later.
Middlesbrough stunned Everton with three goals in seven minutes at the end of the first half and then shut up shop.
The game between two teams fighting against relegation in the premier league had been almost devoid of incident for 35 minutes until a horrible mix-up between Everton defender Alessandro Pistone and goalkeeper Steve Simonsen presented Noel Whelan with the opportunity to roll the ball into an empty net.
Czech Szilard Nemeth headed the second two minutes later after Alen Boksic’s chip had come back off the bar and Paul Ince completed the match-winning spell from close range.
In the second half Middlesbrough were able to switch to cruise control, to the delight of a somewhat surprised manager Steve McClaren.
The victory for Middlesbrough, who knocked out Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers in earlier rounds and have yet to concede a goal in this year’s competition, takes them into the semifinals for only the second time in their 126-year history. The only previous occasion was in 1997, when they went on to lose in the final to Chelsea.
Like Middlesbrough, Fulham have never won the FA Cup but are in the semifinals for the first time in 27 years after ending a four-match losing streak with a solid performance at West Bromwich.
Fulham settled the game two minutes after the break when their record signing Steve Marlet headed home a free kick from fellow Frenchman Steed Malbranque.
West Brom had only a couple of half-chances, the best of which came after just nine minutes when Danny Dichio’s header was cleared off the line by John Collins.
