India brush aside Spain
KUALA LUMPUR, March 7: India brushed aside Spain 3-0 Thursday in the World Cup Hockey Tournament in a play-off.
The Indians, who sacked their coach Cedric D’Souza halfway through the tournament, will now play New Zealand Friday to decide positions nine and ten.
The Indian scorers were Baljit Singh Dhillon, who opened the scoring on the 7th minute, and then two more were added, one by Jugraj Singh from a short corner and the other by Deepak Sonkhla Thakur. There were no goals in the second half.
The defeat left Spain playing Japan Friday in a play-off for 11 and 12 positions.
In other matches, Belgium beat Poland 2-1 after a goalless first half. The Belgians will now take on South Africa, 5-1 winners over Cuba, for berths 13 and 14.
New Zealand and Japan went the distance before the Kiwis managed to score a 7-6 victory in a penalty shoot-out. Both sides were 3-3 in regulation time.
