Qublai grabs glory

LAHORE, Feb 20: Nee Punhal defeated Samsung Mobiles Whites 9 1/2—5 while Samsung Mobiles Blues beat Remounts 7 1/2—3 to qualify for final of the Aibak Cup polo Wednesday.

Shah Qublai Alam scored four goals for Punhal. Taimur Mawaz Khan struck thrice for Blues.

The final will be played Sunday at 3:15 pm with the subsidiary final between Remounts and KFC Remounts scheduled earlier at 2:15 pm.

During first chukker, Isfandyar Pataudi opened scoring for Whites, while Tiwana scored on a 60 yards penalty-hit. Alam scored a field goal for Punhal as they led 3 1/2 -2 at first chukker.

Shamyl scored twice in second chukker and Qublai one. Tiwana scored his second and Whites’ third. Punhal led 6 1/2-3.

Punhal scoring both goals of third chukker through Samiullah and Qublai.

Tiwana converted a spot penalty near the goalpost to complete his hat-trick at the start of the fourth chukker . It was Whites’ fourth goal. Tiwana again scored his fourth and Whites’ fifth goal on a 60 yards penalty. Qublai scored his fourth to give Nee Punhal a clear win.

Blues had advantage of half-a-goal on handicap and opened scoring through Diego Araya, who converted a 40 yards penalty-hit. Gerardo Mazzini scored a field goal. Blues led 1 1/2-1 at first chukker.

Mazzini scored another field goal for Remounts in second chukker but for Blues Malik Atif Yar Tiwana crowned a field effort and Taimur scored with an under the belly shot. That increased Blues lead 3 1/2-2.

Third chukker was completely dominated by Blues, which added four more goals. Taimur himself scored two field goals besides also helping Faaiz Rahim Khan score his only goal. Araya also scored a field goal with a cut shot. Blues led 7 1/2 -2 at the end of third chukker.

Sufi Muhammad Amir scored the only goal of the final chukker, Remounts third and last goal, by converting a spot penalty near the goalpost.
