QUETTA, Feb 15: The Afghan government has handed over to the Pakistan police an Afghan accused of kidnapping the seven-year-old daughter of a child specialist of Quetta.

“Afghan national Afzal Kokozai was handed over to Pakistani authorities on the orders of Hamid Karzai, the head of the Afghan interim government”, Quetta SSP Abid Ali told Dawn on Friday.

Quetta Range DIG Humayun Khan Jogezai shifted the accused to the city from Chaman after the Spin Boldak administration gave the alleged kidnapper into his custody on Thursday evening.

On a demand of the police, Kandahar Governor Gul Agha Sherzai contacted Hamid Karazi, who allowed the Kandahar administration to hand over the accused to the Pakistan police.

“Other accused involved in the kidnapping of seven-year-old Ambreen Yousaf would also be arrested soon”, the SSP said, adding that the other accused were at large in the city.

Four armed men kidnapped Dr Pervez Yousuf’s daughter, Ambreen Yousaf, from the residence of the doctor at gun point on Jan 10. When a young shopkeeper, Mohammad Ayub, put up resistance, the kidnappers shot him to death.

The kidnappers demanded Rs10 million as ransom and later lowered their demand to three million rupees. They asked Dr Yousuf to pay ransom in Spin Boldak.

On a tip-off of the doctor, the police contacted the governor of Kandahar and requested him to help recover the girl.

The police, headed by the DIG and the SSP, on Tuesday raided a place where the alleged kidnapper was receiving the ransom from the servant of Dr Yousuf.

The police also raided a hideout of the kidnappers with the help of the Spin Boldak administration and recovered the abducted girl. The other accused escaped towards Kandahar.
