PESHAWAR, Jan 31: Speakers at a seminar urged the Third World countries to resist and reject dictations from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization, if they wanted real development in their countries.

The seminar on the Fundamental Rights of People was organized by the Council of Economic, Legal and Social Action (CELSA) here at the Peshawar Press Club on Thursday.

National Awami Party chief Ajmal Khan Khattak, Pakistan Awami Party chief, Fanoos Gujjar, PML (ML) provincial president Salim Khan Saifullah, Jamaat-i-Islami provincial president Prof Mohammad Ibrahim, Sahib Singh and Prof Mateem Khan and others spoke.

They argued that the avalanche of globalization was bulldozing the economies, politics, religions, identities and cultures of the developing-developed countries. The industrial giants, known as the G-8, were siphoning off resources of poor countries, they added.

They stressed the importance of regulating the working of the multi-nationals, destroying the economies and trade of poor countries. “The poor countries must have a share in the decision-making apex bodies of World Bank, IMF and WTO to save the rights of poor economies,” they added.

“The new imperialism, which makes a reflection in the form of the globalization, has started the colonization of small and poor countries under the banners of liberalization, privatization and deregulization,” they added.

They observed that the rising new colonialism had taken over the sovereignty of these countries by running them through their non-elected puppets, who were indifferent towards the rule of the law.

Dilating upon the state of affairs in Pakistan, they held the military rulers responsible for the anarchy, violence and poverty in society. From Gen Ayub to Gen Pervez Musharraf everyone had plunged the country into a constitutional crisis and abhorred the constitution, they added.

They held Gen Ayub Khan responsible for introducing a culture of corruption, misuse of power, abhorrence to the rule of law and nepotism in the country. “Gen. Ayub had run the country through his own constitution, which he abrogated when he handed over power to his successor, Gen Yahya Khan,” they added.

They welcomed Gen Musharraf’s agenda against terrorists, local bodies elections and restoration of joint electorate system in the country.

The CELSA president Moazzam Butt through a resolution urged the government to restart work on the Lawari Tunnel.
