Mumbai police on ‘high alert’

MUMBAI, Jan 29: Police in Mumbai have been placed on “high alert” following a tipoff from India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of a possible terrorist attack in the city.

A senor police official said he was aware of certain anti-national elements present in the city and had put the force on “high alert”.

“We are in touch with the CBI and are aware that some anti-national elements may plan terrorist attacks in the city. Even the citizens must be alert,” he said.

Security in and around key entry and exit points in the city has been stepped up, with the police checking virtually every vehicle.

The alert followed last week’s attack outside the American cultural centre in Kolkata in which gunmen killed four police guards and wounded 20 people.

Media reports indicate that Dubai-based underworld don Aftab Ansari, a prime suspect behind the American centre attack, has threatened to kill some senior Mumbai police and target police installations.—AFP
