Khaqan and Irfan steer Pakistan into next stage

CHRISTCURCH, Jan 25: Pakistan stormed into the Super League of the Under 19 World Cup when they overwhelmed England by six wicket in their do or die group “C” game Friday.

Off-spinner Irfanuddin and batsman Khaqan Arsal were architects of their team’s triumph as Pakistan finished on the top of group on a better net-run rate after they were tied with England and Nepal on nine points each.

Irfanuddin grabbed four wickets for 42 runs in ten overs as England were dismissed for 182 in 48.1 overs.

Khaqan Arsal smashed an elegant 62 off 76 balls with six fours and a huge straight six off the bowling of off-spinner Paul McMohan as Pakistan reached the target in 44.4 overs scoring 183-4.

The whole match was played in overcast and murky conditions and was halted for nearly 20 minute because of drizzle with England 71 for two in 19th over.

Pakistan led the group with better net-run rate of plus 0.820 to England plus 0.805 while Nepal had plus 0.387 at the end of the preliminary round matches.

Needing to achieve target within 40 overs to get a bonus point, Pakistan started well by getting 22 in the first four overs. But just 19 runs were scored in next 11 overs.

Pakistan lost Younis in the 14th over for 15. Salman Butt and Khaqan Arsal build the innings by sharing a fighting 83 runs for the second wicket in 20 overs.

Left handed Salman was more cautious scoring 35 off 93 balls with three hits to the ropes before trying to pick up the scoring rate, when he was caught by Bilal at cover point off McMohan.

Khaqan dominated the England bowling attack with his super driving through covers and on the on-side. Khaqan took 12 runs off paceman Tim Bresnan’s four balls in his sixth over.

Enjoying a support of a couple of dozen Pakistani supporters, Khaqan pulled the bowler over mid-wicket for four, took two on the next ball and square drive for another boundary and finished with a couple on the next delivery.

Khaqan reached his 50 off 62 balls. Steven Pope stumped Khaqan standing upto the wicket off pacer Bresnan. Asim Munir was also bowled by Bresnan for 20 with two fours.

But Kamran Sajid and Amin-ur-Rehman saw Pakistan through in 45th over. Sajid finished 22 not out and Amin on an unbeaten 14 laced with two sizzling boundaries.

Yorkshire medium pacer Bresnan was most successful bowler with three wickets for 46 runs in ten overs.

Earlier Karachi-born Irfanuddin, overlooked for the first two games against Papau New Guinea and Nepal, was the most successful of Pakistan bowlers on an easy paced pitch.

Peshawar leg spinner Muhammad Fayyaz also took two key wickets for 25 runs in six overs.

Irfan gave Pakistan a much needed breakthrough when he broke 58 runs third wicket stand between skipper Nick Peng and Gordon Muchall. Irfan’s curling delivery took Peng’s leg stump as he tried to drive through the covers.

Durham batsman Peng made a fluent 59 off 83 balls with seven boundaries. After taking just one wickets in his first spell, Irfanuddin took three wickets in nine balls for nine runs to cause England’s slump.

Talented Irfan was on a hat-trick in his tenth over when he had Samit Patel smartly stumped by Amin-ur-Rehman for 13 and on the next delivery McMohan was caught by at short mid wicket by Asim Munir for a duck.

England last four wickets crumbled in last three overs for 16 runs after they were looking cross 200 mark at one stage.
