Moderate field chalked out

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Jan 22: A six-event card comprising moderate fields has been chalked out for the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races to be held at the Racecourse Wednesday.

All events will be run over the sprinting distance of five furlongs, the first to go under the starter’s order at 12.00 pm. The fields of five events are big except the feature and the sixth event.

The feature event, the Sukkur Plate, a class VII division III & IV combined race, has only eleven runners, barring last-minute withdrawals, with three runners worth mentioning.

They are: the roan colt Puma Star, the chestnut gelding Aao Payar Se and the dark bay horse Time To Lead. They are the only ones, appearing on the board in their recent outings.

In the class VII division V & VI combined handicap race, the five-year-old bay mare Mohni Road looks a good thing in the fifth race in racing order.

This good looking mare, Mohni Road was beaten by Storm Bird last Sunday by four lengths in the race contested over five furlongs. She should make amends and win this time.

The closest rivals of Mohni Road should be Lucky Credit Queen, Fiftysix Fiftysix, Balligio and Fight Again.

The  gymkhana races in Lahore are not  considered  as prestigious and competitive as winter meetings.

This is mainly because of the lesser stake-money offered to horses placed first, second and third. As a result often those installed favourites or public fancy are not sent in to perform on merit.

The majority of owners like to try their horses when available at attractive odds. So the public should remain alert while backing favourites.
