KARACHI, Jan 21: The Sindh Local Government Commission will soon be constituted at provincial level with the minister for local government as its chairman.
The commission will carry out annual inspection of the local councils in the province, resolve disputes among the government departments and district governments, besides inquiring the matters referred to it by DCOs.
The formation of the commission was discussed on Monday at a meeting held with the provincial minister for local government Dewan Yousuf Farooqui in the chair. The meeting was convened to discuss the restructuring of local government and its subordinate departments.
Additional secretary of local government, Mohammad Ayub Shaikh, gave a briefing to the minister on the subject.
The recommendations made in this regard will be submitted to the Sindh governor Mohammedmian Soomro on January 25 for approval.
Underlining the importance of the commission under the local government ordinance 2001, Dewan Yousuf said this would help maintain check and balance among the local governments.
The minister was informed that under the local government ordinance, it had also been proposed to constitute provincial urban development board, which would be assigned the job of formulation, monitoring and evaluation of urban development policies at provincial level and it will act as an interface with the federal government and other donor agencies regarding national housing policy and low cost housing scheme.
Moreover, the local government support officers will be appointed at district level to coordinate among various departments.—PPI
