Nazim demands legal cover for local bodies

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Jan 20: Tehsil Nazim Takht-i-Bahi (Swabi district), Nawabzada Sher Afghan Khan, has asked President Gen Pervez Musharraf to provide constitutional cover to the newly introduced local bodies system.

Speaking at a press conference here on Sunday he suggested that the government should give constitutional cover to the present system of governance before general elections to end the prevailing uncertainty among the people. He said that the new system greatly benefited the common people as now they could solve their problems at local level.

He said that despite limited resources civic facilities had been improved in tehsil Takht-i-Bahi and the tehsil council had taken several measures to control power theft in the area and reduce non-development expenditures. He said that the administration had removed encroachment, improved sanitation system and fixed street lights.

Sher Afghan said that district council Mardan would soon release Rs3.4 million which would be spent on development works in tehsil council.

He denied reports that he had some differences with Naib Nazim, Haji Rozi Khan.
