Karachi ‘W’ beat Lower Sindh

KARACHI, Jan 17: Karachi Whites overwhelmed Lower Sindh 10-0 in the opener of the preliminary round of junior under-18 national hockey championship amid several violations of game’s rules Thursday.

Although the match proved a one-sided affair in the later stage, hosts took a snail’s paced start and couldn’t generate an impressive move in the opening 14 minutes of the game.

The home side, however, came out of their shell with three first half goals.

Imran Khan broke the stalemate in the 15th minute when his pass was put into the net by a Lower Sindh defender’s stick.

After missing two clear openings in the 17th and 19th minutes, local side added another off a penalty corner through Falak Bose.

Karachi Whites’ squandered another chance two minutes later when Khayamuddin fumbled a Wasif Raza pass. But Mohammad Ali compensated Khayam’s blunder with a reverse flick five minutes before half time whistle.

Hapless Lower Sindh had to brave the unexpected chilly winds at the UBL Sports Complex besides a 7-goal blitz that came after the change of ends from the home side.

The winners started the second half with a two-goal burst with Noman Zakir scoring in the 38th-minute goal, while Imran blasted the board off a rebound two minutes later.

Albeit, the visitors, a combination of Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Dadu, Kotri and Thatta, were no match for the Karachi Whites, their goalkeeper Murtaza Hussain brought off some fine saves.

Imran’s 52nd-minute goal was followed by two quick goals. Azlan Khan, son of national coach and former Pakistan captain Hanif Khan, slammed in the 63rd minute, while Wasif got the eighth goal two minutes later.

Faheem Khan, a Hanif’s nephew, iced the proceedings, with 66th and 68th-minute goals.

The dull tie didn’t provide entertainment to the handful fans at the venue but a number of rule violations must have attracted attention of quite a few.

First, the players from both sides were not in a proper playing kits since many could be seen wearing white snickers and wrong colours. For instance, Lower Sindh’s Atif Hussain wore red short instead of white and his team-mates Uzair and Mohammad Adil were in green shorts.

Likewise, Karachi Whites’ Tahir Shuja wore black instead of a white short in the second half.

The scoreboard was missing, while the playing field had faded markings, the semi circle and the 25-yard line were barely visible. Players had to fish the ball out whenever it went into the damaged drain on the sidelines.

Above all, the Karachi Colours players opted to practice in the second half in a corner of the field while the two sides were busy playing.
