NWFP batsmen show no guts

Published January 18, 2002

RAWALPINDI, Jan 17: Islamabad’s spirits were dampened Thursday by a reluctant Rest of NWFP who showed little interest in going for victory and just batted out the overs in the Quaid Trophy match at the KRL Stadium.

With more than two days having been lost to rain and rival captains agreeing to forfeit their first innings to make the match result-oriented Islamabad collected a respectable 195. They had resumed at the overnight total of 100 for seven.

But the Rest who were required to score 196 in 54 overs for victory, did not show guts in chasing what was clearly an achievable total after they had lost two early wickets. They finished on 113 for four.

A victory for either side would have earned them nine points but the Rest spoilt the very spirit in which the first innings had been forfeited.

For Islamabad debutante Shakir Mahmood, eight overnight, scored a polished unbeaten 45 guiding them towards respectability. Later in the order, Saad Janjua contributed 36 to further boost the total.

Slow left-armer Noorul Amin was the successful Rest bowler, picking up another two wickets to add to his overnight four.

Asmatullah was the top NWFP batsman and scored 42 not out.

Meanwhile the match between Rawalpindi and Peshawar at the Rawalpindi Stadium was a complete washout.
