PESHAWAR, Jan 9: Work on the construction of drains in union council Kaneeza of Peshawar district began on Wednesday.

The project was jointly inaugurated by the Union Nazim, Israrullah advocate, and representative of Department of International Development, London, Steve John.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Mr John said the cooperation between the governments of UK and Pakistan would continue and he would like to visit the area again to see the impact of the development project. He appreciated the enthusiasm of the area people in the construction of drainage.

Israrullah advocate said that the system of local government based on participatory approach would benefit the people at the grassroots level. Now the people were directly involved in the decision-making process which was a step in the right direction, he added.

He informed the gathering that major development projects relating to health, education, farm-to-market roads, desilting of drains, construction of control structure for irrigation would soon be undertaken in the union council with the help and cooperation of the town and district councils.
