KARACHI, Jan 4: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Friday warned that it may reconsider its decision to participate in the forthcoming general elections if the government’s operation against its workers is not stopped.
“The excesses against our workers are compelling us to take some bold steps,” Deputy Conveners of the party’s Coordination Committee, Aftab Ahmed Shaikh, said at a new conference at Karachi Press Club.
He claimed that a number of police officers involved in the alleged anti-MQM operation launched in 1992 had been again posted in Karachi. Mr Shaikh maintained that the operation initiated by previous governments was continuing.
He charged that the Korangi police had arrested 30 MQM workers during last one month and that raids were being conducted at the residences of the workers.
The Muttahida leaders asked the Chief Justice of Pakistan; President Pervez Musharraf, and the human rights organizations to take notice of the alleged excesses against the party workers at a time when unity and coordination between the political parties and the government were more significant than ever before.—PPI
