18 killed in Kashmir violence

SRINAGAR, Jan 2: Eighteen people, including 11 Indian policemen, were injured on Wednesday when unidentified men threw grenades outside the main gate of occupied Kashmir’s assembly, police said.

The attack took place some 30 metres from the main gate of the assembly building in Srinagar.

“Militants first threw a grenade at a moving police van which did not explode,” a police official said. “Immediately, the bomb disposal squads and more policemen arrived at the scene after which they threw two more grenades which exploded.”

Two of the injured were described by hospital sources as being in a serious condition.

Among the injured were 11 policemen, including six officers, and one Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. The rest were civilians.

The building is currently closed as the held state’s government has shifted to occupied Jammu.

This is the second attack on the legislature in the past three months.

On Oct 1, 38 people were killed after suicide bombers blew up a car outside the building.—AFP
