Bolton check Liverpool

LONDON, Jan 2: Liverpool lost the chance to return to the top of the English premier league when they were held 1-1 at Anfield by Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday, while Chelsea were stunned 4-2 at home by lowly Southampton.

Kevin Nolan struck a 78th-minute equaliser for Bolton to leave Liverpool still in fourth place on 38 points, but only one point behind leaders Arsenal and Newcastle United.

James Beattie scored twice in Southampton’s shock win at Chelsea while Everton also suffered a new year hangover, losing 1-0 at Middlesbrough, their fifth defeat in a row.

Arsenal’s game against Leicester City later on Tuesday was postponed due to frost. Leeds United, third on 38 points, went back top when they won their home clash with West Ham United 3-0.

PREMIER LEAGUE RESULTS:

Charlton Athletic 3 Ipswich Town 2

Chelsea 2 Southampton 4

Leeds United 3 West Ham United 0

Leicester City v Arsenal postponed

Liverpool 1 Bolton Wanderers 1
